Feeling Like Roommates? Simple Ways to Reconnect

You share a home, make plans, and get through the day together. But most conversations are about meals, bills, appointments, or the children. You may miss feeling close to your partner, even when you spend a lot of time in the same house.

You do not need a perfect date night to begin making room for each other. Start with something small that works for both of you.

Talk about what you miss

Try saying: “One thing I miss about us is…” You might miss laughing together, holding hands, or having time to talk. Ask your partner what they miss too. You do not need to have the same answer or solve everything right away.

Share the everyday jobs

It can be hard to enjoy time together when either person feels worn out by everything that needs doing. Look at a few regular jobs and talk about who will handle them. Include the planning as well as the task. For example, managing a child’s appointment could mean booking it, arranging a ride, and following up afterward.

Choose a small moment together

Try a cup of tea, a short walk, or a few minutes talking without your phones. Choose something you both have time and energy for. If one of you needs rest, find another time. Time together should feel like a welcome part of your day.

Ask what would help

When your partner has had a hard day, ask: “Would you like me to listen, or would you like help working it out?” You do not have to guess what they need. You can also say what you need: “I’d like to talk about my day. Could you listen for a few minutes?”

Notice each other’s efforts

A simple thank-you can show that you notice what your partner does. Be specific: “Thank you for making that call. It made my day easier.” You can show appreciation and still talk about changes that would make things feel fairer.

When you need more support

If you keep trying to connect but end up arguing or feeling alone, couples counselling can help you talk about what is missing and what you would like to change. Depending on your needs, individual counselling or parenting support may also help.
